Along with students from Bangor, Aberystwyth and Cardiff Universities, they got a taste of studying languages through the medium of Welsh aswell as experiencing city life from their base at Gwersyll yr Urdd in Cardiff Bay.

They received useful presentations from experts in their fields, including Mererid Hopwood and Ellie Jones from CILT Cymru. Dr Mererid Hopwood spoke about ‘Botwm y Byd,’ a project which will be of interest to those studying Modern Languages, Journalism, Politics and History. Ellie Jones spoke about the advantages of studying languages and the career opportunities available in Wales for modern language students.

A series of micro lectures were also held which gave the students a taste of the varied modules and styles available by studying modern languages through the medium of Welsh. They ranged from the world of the cinema in France, minority languages in Europe and an introduction to Catalunya and the history of Patagonia.

They also got an opportunity their language skills to the test by participating in an olympic themed grammar test and an exciting quiz about European cultures.

Bonnie Stephens, French and Spanish student at Swansea University said: ‘‘The course was very educational and I received plenty of information about the various fields of studying modern languages. I made many friends and it was great to be able to socialise with Welsh language medium students who study the same subjects.’’

Dr Geraldine Lublin from Swansea University’s Department of Languages, Translation and Communications concluded: ‘‘It was great to see students from all parts of Wales socialising and sharing their interests in languages through the medium of Welsh. I would like to thank Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for sponsoring the event and Gwersyll yr Urdd Caerdydd for allowing us to use their excellent facilities.’’
