Dr Stephen Mellalieu, from the Centre for Applied Sports Technology and Medicine (ASTEM) in the College of Engineering is one of the founders of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Rugby Science Network that was unveiled at the IRB Medical Commission Conference in Dublin.

Dr Mellalieu commented, "The IRB Rugby Science Network is a global network of researchers who are interested in the science and practice of the Rugby Football codes. The aim of this network is to provide a dedicated international forum which brings together expertise from academics and professionals associated with the codes to facilitate the scientific study and translation of scientific knowledge into professional practice.

“ The vehicle for this international collaboration is a website where interested academics and professionals can register and engage in interaction and discussion regarding various areas of the game such as match analysis, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, injury prevention and sports medicine."

Along with Dr Mellalieu, another member of the Centre for Applied Sports Technology and Medicine at Swansea University, Dr Liam KIlduff, is also heavily involved as section editor of the strength and power section. The website has been developed in conjunction with the IRB Training and Medical Department.

 Mark Harrington, IRB Training and Medical Department Manager commented, "The IRB has over 100 associate and full member nations and the Rugby Science network represents a truly global phenomenon that offers the opportunity for knowledge exchange and transfer among our rugby community."

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Noel Thompson said: “The development of this international networking forum shows Swansea sport scientists leading on knowledge transfer and exchange, in collaboration with professional and international sporting governing bodies and organisations.”
