Three lucky lecturers from Academi Hywel Teifi at Swansea University spent some time in the United States of America over the summer teaching on a Welsh for Adults Course at Utah University.

Steve Morris, Chris Reynolds and Mark Stonelake taught on a course organised by Cymdeithas Madog, the Welsh Studies Institute in North America.

Swansea University’s South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre has a strong link with Cymdeithas Madog with many members of staff having taught on the course over the past twenty years.

The course is held in a different location each year and attracts learners from all over America and Canada. This year, many people who once lived in Wales and some who have a connection with Wales took part on the course.

They received some important grammatical tips as well as a session by Dr Ronald Dennis, a former Professor at Utah’s Brigham Young University about those who emigrated from Wales to Utah. They also got a chance to relax and socialise by taking part in various activities each day.

Steve Morris said: ‘‘This particular course is the only link many people have with Wales and it was great to see so much positivity towards the Welsh language. Teaching on the course was a great pleasure and an unforgettable experience.’’

Mark Stonelake will be leading the course next year, when it takes place at Carthage College, Wisconsin during summer 2013.
