An event to showcase the achievements of the companies engaging with the Algal Biotechnology for Wales Centre was held this week, as part of a programme of events established through Swansea University’s business network, Knowledge Exchange Wales (KEW).
The ‘Green Growth for Business’ event highlighted the range of benefits on offer to businesses through involvement with the centre and KEW and also toured the facilities at the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research (CSAR) at Swansea University.
Attendees learned more about the wide range of support available from the university, including access to research, training facilities and up to date funding information.

Swansea University leads the way in applied academic algal research in Wales through the Algae Biotechnology for Wales, a Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) funded by the Welsh Government Academic Expertise for Business Programme which was established to support collaboration between businesses and universities.
Dr Adam Powell, Algal Biotechnology Knowledge Transfer Officer, said “This seminar provided case studies of products and services developed with help from our facilities and expertise. The Department of Biosciences at Swansea University has one of the largest publicly available algal growth systems in the UK, including specialist processing and harvesting equipment via our strong links with Engineering colleagues. This know-how and ability to produce testable quantities of algal biomass has allowed us to assist several local enterprises, and I hope to continue the service for years to come”.
