The meeting organised by Swansea University’s South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre will be held between 10.30-15.30.

The need to establish more Canolfannau Cymraeg in non Welsh speaking communities across Wales will be under discussion following a research report launched in the Assembly over the summer.

‘Canolfannau Cymraeg and Social Networks of Adult Learners of Welsh’ was written by Heini Gruffudd and Steve Morris on behalf of South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre.

The report recommended that a network of Canolfannau Cymraeg should be established around Wales, which would offer Welsh learners and others a place to socialise outside the classroom.

The aim of the day will be for everyone to share their ideas and ensure that the campaign to create more Canolfannau Cymraeg is a priority on the linguistic agenda and also encourage others to establish more Canolfannau Cymraeg.

One session will concentrate on the Canolfannau Cymraeg that already exist, including Tŷ Tawe, Popeth Cymraeg and Canolfan Merthyr but there will also be an opportunity to hear about those which are currently being developed in both Llanelli and Barry. The meeting will draw to a close with an open discussion about the way forward.

Aled Davies, Director of South-West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre who will chair the sessions said: ‘‘Learners’ contribution can be vital towards any efforts to support and increase the use of the Welsh language. The research clearly emphasised that Canolfannau Cymraeg help learners to find ways of using the language and contribute towards Welsh life in their areas. In this meeting, we hope to support the efforts of those who are in the process of developing Canolfannau Cymraeg and motivate further developments in other areas of Wales.’’
